Energising Communities during COVID-19
Green Doctors are community-based energy efficiency experts who help people save money, stay warm, and improve energy efficiency in the home. We typically visit people in their homes to provide bespoke advice, but are now offering phone consultations to ensure we can still provide help despite limitations caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Who we can support through Energising Communties?
Generally speaking, we can support people who fulfil one or more of the following criteria:
Low income | Living with debt | Physical or mental health issues | Dementia | Disabled | In emergency accommodation | Poor housing conditions | In receipt of benefits
Where we work
Our Energising Communities teams can currently support people if they live in:
Blackpool, Barnsley, Burnley, Kirklees, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Rochdale, Staffordshire Moorlands, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland
Note: In addition to Energising Communities, Groundwork’s Green Doctors are supporting people across the UK through other schemes. If you are in an area not listed above, please visit the Green Doctor section of the main Groundwork website to see if other Green Doctor projects can help instead.
“It’s hard financially when it’s the winter months. Having small children as well, it’s important to keep warm. The Green Doctors came and showed me how to save energy, apply for grants and put reflective panels behind the radiators, which helped a lot.”

“The Green Doctor scheme has provided me with enormous, enormous amounts of help, I just think that words can’t express how they helped me yesterday and they were just so very, very kind and so efficient, two lovely young people. I rang up today because I thought they deserved recognition of being so fabulous.”
“The Green Doctor was a great help. I live on my own and need to save a bit of money and I now I feel a lot better about my energy bills. He helped me to go on U-Switch to change supplier, which saved me a lot of money. He also showed me how to use my combi-boiler more efficiently, which I didn’t know anything about. He did me a big favour, I found it really useful.”
“When it’s cold, it’s very hard. The children say ‘It’s cold mama’. The electricity and gas is very expensive but I can’t do anything about that. It costs a lot of money to stop the children getting sick. [The Green Doctors] told me what to do and it’s made a big difference. We’re ready now, we’re ready for winter!”
Frequently Asked Questions
What support can the Green Doctor offer on the phone?
The Green Doctor will be able to offer advice on how to save energy around your client’s home. Much like with a home visit, the Green Doctor will offer advice on a room by room basis and will identify where they might be able to save money and energy.
How long will the call last?
The call will last between 45 – 60 minutes, depending on the particular energy needs.
What is the difference between a home visit and a telephone consultation?
The Green Doctor won’t be able to install small measures in the home, however we will note down what they would like to receive and will do our best to provide these at a later date.
How should the resident prepare for the telephone consultation?
To help us give the best advice, please ask the resident to have their energy bills to hand. During the consultation, we will also ask some questions about the age of the boiler and if any repairs in the home are required. Don’t worry if they don’t have all the information to hand, as they can always share this information with us at a later date where possible.
Can a Green Doctor still help residents to switch energy tariff?
The Green Doctor will be able to give advice on their bills and what tariff might be best. Please ask the resident to have their utility bills to hand so that the Green Doctor can ask questions about what they are being charged.
Can the resident still get advice on my gas, electricity or water arrears?
Yes, the Green Doctor will be able to advise on support available for any energy or water debt that they might have. Where possible, the Green Doctor will be able to fill out a form and, with the resident’s consent, apply directly on their behalf for a grant.
Will the resident be charged for this service?
No, both the home visits and telephone consultations are absolutely free to the resident. Groundwork is a charity that receives funding from grant-making bodies, local authorities and housing associations to support this service, so it won’t cost them a penny.
If the resident does have a home visit at a later date, who will be going to the house?
Our friendly team of Green Doctors are trained energy advisors who provide advice on energy saving, energy bills, and heating systems. There will be one or two Green Doctors who carry out the visit and they will ring the resident beforehand to let them know they are on their way, and to check if the time is still convenient. All Green Doctors carry an ID badge which they will happily show to the resident on arrival.
The resident has arranged a telephone consultation but it isn’t a convenient time now. Can they change it?
Yes. Contact details should have been provided when the booking was made. They can contact us via those details and we can reschedule.
Do you run online events & training?
Yes we do run events and training. Please get in contact about how we can run an online training or advice event for you or your clients.
